Patrick Mahomes Makes NFL History on ‘Monday Night Football’
The Kansas City Chiefs entered Monday night’s showdown against the Washington Commanders, who were without star quarterback Jayden Daniels, riding a two-game win streak.
The victories brought them to 4–3 and back near the top of the AFC West alongside the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers. Both offenses, however, got off to somewhat slow starts.
Marcus Mariota threw an interception that bounced off Deebo Samuel’s hands, and Washington came up short on two fourth-down conversions.
Meanwhile, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes tossed two interceptions of his own before Kansas City finally drove down the field. Running back Kareem Hunt capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown to put the first points on the board.
During that drive, after a few completions from Mahomes, he made NFL history. According to NFL+, Mahomes became only the second player in league history, alongside Peyton Manning, to throw for 40,000 yards in his first nine seasons, including playoffs.

What makes this historic feat for Mahomes even more remarkable is that, while he has played in the postseason every year he’s been a starter, he spent nearly all of his rookie season on the bench behind veteran Alex Smith.
Drafted in the first round out of Texas Tech in 2017—a move that many fans were initially skeptical of—Mahomes only saw a few spot appearances before eventually taking over as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback.

Through seven games, Mahomes has gotten off to one of his best starts in recent memory.
Entering Monday’s game, he was completing 66.1% of his passes for 1,400 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just two interceptions. While he added another interception in the first half against Washington, he remains one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL as October winds down.
