The New York Mets are set to lose Pete Alonso in free agency this winter, and their fanbase won’t be too happy if that happens.
The Mets need to make some moves this winter, including potentially re-signing Alonso, if they want to close the gap on the teams at the top of the National League. After missing the postseason, the Mets could get desperate in free agency and on the trade block.
Just Baseball’s Ryan Finkelstein recently predicted the Mets would retain Alonso in free agency on a huge five-year, $150 million deal.
“With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. now making just north of $35 million per season, Alonso settling in at $30 million a year seems like a fair price,” Finkelstein wrote. “Maybe to go to a five, or even a six-year commitment, the Mets can convince Alonso to help them with the luxury tax by deferring some of the deal.
“Regardless, the Mets are going to have a very hard time trying to replace Alonso if they don’t re-sign him, so I expect the two sides to find some common ground.”
Alonso is going to be hard to replace if the Mets lose him. Because of that, they can’t afford to lose him.
The Mets have the money to give Alonso well over $100 million if that’s what he’s asking for. They were reluctant to pay him this much last winter, but after another incredible season, they will need to pay the money if they want him back.
Alonso and his bat should stay in Queens for the next few seasons, if not longer.
