Pete Alonso Weighs In On Fellow First Baseman’s ‘Huge, Huge, Huge’ New Deal
Earlier this season, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. shocked the baseball world when it was announced he had agreed to a massive 14-year contract that would pay him $500 million.
Everybody in baseball seemed to think Guerrero was heading for free agency next winter, but it’s hard to pass up on a contract worth half a billion dollars.
This contract, like Juan Soto’s deal, is bound to shift the market. It’s important to note that a lot of people see this as a huge overpay, so it won’t shift the market as much as it typically would, but there’s still going to be some trickle-down effect.
Especially for the New York Mets’ star first baseman Pete Alonso, who’s off to quite a hot start this season.

“Obviously, half a billion dollars is a huge, huge, huge amount,” Alonso told reporters, via Bob Nightengale of USA Today. “So like for him, it’s a fantastic deal, and it’s great for the first-base market. I think 14 years, he’s just done well, deservedly so. … And I think right now, you can’t think of the Toronto Blue Jays without Vlad Jr.”
Alonso noted Guerrero’s deal is great for the first base market, which is the truth. With Guerrero landing such a massive contract, the next star free agent first baseman to hit the open market should be in for a nice payday.
Alonso struggled to land the money he felt he deserved last offseason in free agency. Rather than landing a deal worth around $200 million, he signed a two-year, $54 million deal with a player option in year two.
Pair Alonso’s hot start with Guerrero’s $500 million deal, and Alonso could potentially land a $100-plus million deal if he opts out next offseason.
