PGA Tour History Made at Byron Nelson as Scottie Scheffler Tears Up
Scottie Scheffler is officially back in form!
Scheffler, the World No. 1, decimated the CJ Cup Byron Nelson field to win by eight strokes at 31-under par. It was the largest victory at the event since 1983.
But even more remarkable was the overall strokes. Scheffler’s 253 total strokes tied Justin Thomas and Ludvig Aberg for the lowest 72-hole score in PGA Tour history.
Let that sink in.
After winning his hometown event, Scheffler spoke with Amanda Balionis and began breaking down.
“This tournament means a lot to me,” Scheffler said holding back tears as he held his 1-year-old son.
“My first start as a pro, 11 years ago. I had my sister caddying for me, she’s back there too [pointing back behind him].”
“It feels like a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice for little moments like these are pretty special,” Scheffler said as he wiped a tear from his eye.
The entire time he spoke on the course, his voice was shaky at best. It was very clear what an emotional state he was in after winning his 14th career PGA Tour event.

Baliones then showed Scheffler a picture of his 6-year-old self with Byron Nelson.
“He’s a great man. He was great for the game of golf. He was a great person… I am proud to be the champion of his event.”
The Ridgewood, New Jersey native actually had a birdie putt on 18 to hold the scoring record alone. Sadly, the putt 10-foot putt missed just low of the hole, as he tapped in for par.
The world’s top-ranked golfer is hitting his stride just in time. The season’s second major tees off in 11 days at Quail Hollow for the PGA Championship.
It is going to be compelling to watch, as most of the best players in the world are atop their games, respectively.
Rory McIlroy has already won three times this year, including at The Masters. Bryson DeChambeau broke his LIV Golf drought in Korea this week. Even Jordan Spieth played flawlessly on Sunday for a fourth place finish.
All eyes in the world of golf will be in Charlotte.
