Phillies Urged To Sign $65 Million Padres Tanner Scott To Shore Up Bullpen This Winter

The Philadelphia Phillies have been rumored to be interested in a complete roster shakeup this winter. They would likely keep their core players, but All-Stars like Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos have been rumored to be on the trade block. Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez are both unrestricted free agents as well.
With this in mind, specifically the two key relief pitchers entering free agency, the Phillies could use a few bullpen arms this offseason.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline has the perfect idea. Kline has suggested the Phillies pursue the best reliever on the market, Tanner Scott. Scott is projected to sign a four-year, $65 million deal, per Spotrac, though he may earn a bit more because of how competitive his market will be.

“Both Hoffman and Estevez are free agents this winter, leaving the Phillies at risk of major losses to a bullpen that could already use a boost. Why not Tanner Scott, the top-ranked reliever in this free agency class,” Kline wrote. “Scott split last season between Miami and San Diego, meaning the Phillies are well and truly familiar with his skill set. The hard-throwing lefty dominated across 72 appearances (72.0 innings), notching a 1.75 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 84 punch-outs.”
Scott would be the perfect addition for the Phillies, as long as they can fill their other holes first. Paying upwards of $15 million a year for a closer is quite a steep price to pay when there are other solid options available for much cheaper.
But, if the Phillies can make the money work, Scott is the top reliever on the market.
