Pokémon GO Tour Unova Field Research Tasks Give Pokémon With Special Backgrounds
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Unova calls Pokémon GO players around the world on March 1 and 2, 2025, with the GO Tour: Unova – Global event. One of the surprises Niantic kept in store for the physical events was a special type of Field Research Task, named Enigma Field Research. Though the missions were nothing special by themselves, their rewards offered a welcome surprise: The Pokémon you got from the reward encounters came with a special set of background art.
Players who couldn’t make it to one of the in-person GO Tour events need not be disappointed, though. GO Tour: Unova – Global will also feature the Enigma Field Research Tasks, giving you the chance to grab some of those Pokémon with special backgrounds for yourself.

Enigma Field Research Tasks, like other event-exclusive Field Research Tasks, can be obtained by spinning the photodiscs of PokéStops while GO Tour: Unova – Global is going on. It’s a bit of a gamble whether you get regular Field Research Tasks or Enigma Field Research Tasks, as no visual difference between a PokéStop granting one or the other type of mission exists. It’s going to be a trial and error process to figure out which PokéStops in your vicinity deliver which tasks.
At least the Enigma Field Research Tasks aren’t complicated or difficult to complete — in fact, there is only a single type of them, challenging you to “Catch 10 different species of Pokémon first discovered in Unova.” This is not only straightforward, but should be simple enough given an overabundance of Unova Pokémon during the upcoming event.
Here are all Pokémon with special background art available from the GO Tour: Unova – Global Enigma Field Research Tasks:
- Boldore
- Darmanitan
- Darumaka
- Ferroseed
- Joltik
- Klink
- Pidove
- Purrloin
- Sandile
- Scraggy
- Sigilyph
- Timburr
- Tympole
- Woobat
- Zorua
All of the listed Pokémon can appear in their Shiny form during the reward encounter. Make sure to grab your free Legendary Pokémon from the ongoing Road to Unova event before it ends.
