Prince Harry and Meghan Solo Visits Spark Debate
Prince Harry turned out for the Grey Cup in Canada while Meghan Markle had a night out in Los Angeles—leading to press coverage about their different paths.
The U.K. press have previously indulged in speculation, couched in the language of divorce, over whether the couple were going their separate ways. However, Harry and Meghan’s latest appearances came just days after a joint video message played at a conference in Colombia and the resulting tabloid stories were, perhaps, a little less feverish.
The more-muted reaction suggests outlets may still consider there to be a market for stories on a divided Sussex future but are more accepting of the improbability of such an outcome.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Divorce Rumors
Harry and Meghan were first subject to divorce rumors in 2023 after the prince’s book, Spare, sparked ridicule and their Spotify deal later collapsed.
That summer, Harry and Meghan kept a low profile, and gossip began to take hold that all was not well in Montecito.
U.K. newspaper The Daily Telegraph had already reported they were dividing their professional operation, with Meghan and Harry taking on different areas of work.
This was evidenced most clearly by Meghan signing with Hollywood talent agents WME.
Soon, though, rumors escalated to the suggestion they had a secret $80 million divorce, which Newsweek fact-checked at the time as false.
Widespread speculation died down after they appeared together at the Invictus Games in September 2023 and put on a loved-up display.
However, the gossip returned in October after Harry went on a world tour, taking in New York, Britain and southern Africa, while Meghan stayed home looking after Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
A couple of months earlier, they had a joint tour of Colombia in August, during which they were photographed kissing passionately and dancing in each other’s arms.
Newsweek understands the speculation about the strength of their marriage is baseless.
Meghan and Harry’s Recent Appearances
Harry went to Vancouver, Canada, at the weekend where he was cheered by football fans at the Grey Cup and gave a pitchside interview about his Invictus Games tournament for wounded veterans.
“First Grey Cup,” the prince said. “What are we looking forward to? The game getting started; let’s go.”
Asked about Invictus, Harry replied: “Well, it’s our 10-year anniversary this year, which is pretty exciting.”
Harry watched the Toronto Argonauts win their 19th Grey Cup after beating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 41- 24 on November 17.
A day later, he launched the Invictus Games 2025 School Program at Seaforth Armoury, in Vancouver, where he played sit-down volleyball with children and spread the word about the tournament.
The visit came a few days after Meghan had a night out to celebrate her hair stylist Kadi Lee launching her Highbrow Hippie Haircare & Wellness brand together with cofounder Myka Harris, in Venice, Los Angeles. Meghan has invested in the company.
Meghan was seen planting a kiss on Lee’s cheek as they posed with Serge Normant, the royal’s hair stylist, in footage posted to Instagram by the business’ official account.
The duchess’ wedding makeup artist and friend Daniel Martin was also at the event and wrote on Instagram: “Such a fun night and my hubby is loving the serum already!!”
Media Reaction to Meghan and Harry’s Recent Solo Outings
Harry and Meghan’s more recent events drew comment in the U.K. media but at a more muted volume compared to October.
The U.K. newspaper The Mirror ran the headline “Hidden change in Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s marriage uncovered by expert” and the subhead: “Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been making more solo appearances in recent months, and a body language expert believes it shows a ‘sad’ shift in their relationship.”
Another Mirror article suggested he “wants his space” though the publication has also acknowledged a recent joint appearance in a video message.
Harry and Meghan stood side by side ahead of Remembrance Sunday as they wore poppies and spoke about their project to protect children from online harm. The footage was played at a conference in Colombia.
The Daily Mail noted Meghan went “without her husband Prince Harry” to the Highbrow Hippie event but held back from the kind of speculation the newspaper indulged in back in October when they ran the headline: “Why Harry is going it alone: He and Meghan have barely been seen together for weeks.”
Back then, The Daily Telegraph also ran a feature asking, “Where’s Meghan?” while the New York Post had: “‘Desperate’ Harry gets serious about repairing his image—and Meghan is not part of the project: ‘He wants space.'”
Gossip and rumor about the strength of their marriage has tended to spike during periods out of the limelight or periods in which they are not seen together and then recede after joint appearances.
The softer coverage given to their latest solo outings may therefore signal the papers are becoming more accustomed to this cyclic process and less inclined toward implicit references to divorce.
