The Los Angeles Rams are one of the top Super Bowl contenders this season largely due to the heroic efforts of Matthew Stafford, who is the frontrunner for the NFL MVP award in spite of being 37 years old.
However, the Rams must face the reality of Stafford’s impending departure. Stafford hasn’t been shy talking about his retirement, and if Los Angeles goes on to win a championship this year, you do have to wonder if he will ultimately decide to call it quits.

In that case, the Rams would need to find an answer under center as soon as possible given that they are built to contend for the next several years, but Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport has floated a bizarre option for the team: Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
Davenport has pitched a trade in which the Rams would send a 2027 fourth-round draft pick to the Dolphins in exchange for Tagovailoa, a sixth-round draft pick and some salary compensation to help cover the remaining three years on the four-year, $212 million extension Tagovailoa signed with Miami in 2024.
“The Rams have the cap space to take on Tagovailoa’s contract for a year, although Les Snead would likely demand the Dolphins pick up part of the tab. Playing for Sean McVay on a winning team might even motivate Tagovailoa to agree to a restructure that would make his contract more cap-friendly,” Davenport wrote.
Davenport then qualified his proposal by noting that Tagovailoa led the league in passing yards in 2023.
That much is true, but the 27-year-old also had a healthy Tyreek Hill at his disposal that year, and it also marked the only time in his NFL career that he played a full season.
Tagovailoa’s injury history — particular in terms of concussions — is well documented, and this season, the former first-round pick leads the NFL with 15 interceptions.

It seems pretty clear that Tagovailoa has declined, and some would question if he were ever legitimately a franchise-caliber quarterback to begin with.
The Rams definitely need to find a post-Stafford solution, but Tagovailoa does not seem like the answer.
