On Friday, Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta shared an incredibly unfortunate update on former Ravens defensive tackle and Super Bowl XLVII hero Arthur Jones, who passed away at the age of 39.
Jones first rose to prominence during his time as a standout at Syracuse University alongside his younger brother, fellow former NFL star Chandler Jones, from 2006 to 2009, before going on to get drafted in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
The former Syracuse product, who is also the brother of former UFC Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight champion Jon Jones, would then play seven years in the NFL, most notably for Baltimore, where he played a crucial role in the team’s Super Bowl XLVII victory over the San Francisco 49ers, recording a sack and recovering a fumble in the game.

In a statement from DeCosta on the Ravens’ X account, the team honored his contributions to the organization during his four-year tenure, with DeCosta highlighting some of the charismatic energy he brought to the locker room.
“We are terrible saddened to learn of Arthur Jones’ sudden passing,” wrote DeCosta. “Arthur’s presence was a gift to everyone he encountered. His big, bright smile, infectious energy and eternal positivity created a presence that continually uplifted others. He was kind, courteous and enthusiastic, always displaying a love for family, teammates, and friends. We send our deepest condolences to the Jones family and all that loved Arthur.”

In addition to playing for the Ravens, Jones also played for the Indianapolis Colts for two seasons, starting a combined 11 games for the organization in 2014 and 2016. Similarly, the Colts organization paid tribute to Jones’ legacy and impact on the organization in a post on social media in light of his passing.
