Red Sox Get Devastating Update On Injured Pitcher’s Availability

Despite an impressive 3-1 Game 1 victory against the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox received devastating news that could impact the rest of the postseason for the team.
Boston took the lead in the series with a spectacular pitching display by Garrett Crochet and Aroldis Chapman and some late-game heroics at the plate. The Red Sox have Brayan Bello at the bump for Game 2 with the Yankees, but still may need to figure out a Game 3 starter with Lucas Giolito out for the series with an elbow injury.
While speaking to reporters before Game 1 against the Yankees, Red Sox manager Alex Cora relayed how the team does not expect Giolito to pitch in October, according to MassLive.com’s Christopher Smith.
“It seems like it’s not as bad as we thought in the beginning, but we’re still gathering information,” Cora told reporters Tuesday. “Hopefully it’s just rest. But obviously it doesn’t seem like he’s going to be able to pitch in October.”

“It’s tough. He was one of the best we had,” Cora told reporters. “He threw the ball extremely well. Makes me wonder how banged up he was lately, especially with the velo (being down) and command. It seems like he wasn’t on point for a while there. But we’ve got other guys that are capable and we just gotta continue. Just another obstacle in our journey. But here we are and we gotta go.”
Giolito has been one of Boston’s most consistent pitchers this season, going 10-4 in 26 starts with a 3.41 ERA and 121 strikeouts. Behind Crochet and Bello, the 31-year-old was set to be the Red Sox’s third pitcher in the rotation for the playoffs. Giolito’s absence will leave a void Boston needs to fill if they want to make a deep playoff run.
