Red Sox Get Massive Update on Alex Bregman Extension as Free Agency Decision Looms

The Boston Red Sox are hovering around .500 and within striking distance of a postseason berth. They are expected to get Alex Bregman back at some point, which could really help them make a postseason push.

With Rafael Devers now out of the picture, Bregman will be expected to be the biggest contributor to the Red Sox’s offense. Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal last winter and has an opt-out in his contract that he can exercise after the season.

The Red Sox reportedly saved over $250 million by trading Devers. They now have the money to comfortably pay Bregman if he opts out, which is highly likely. However, his agent, Scott Boras, recently revealed that Bregman is open to discussing an extension.

“I always tell the team — and Alex directs me to tell them — we’re always open to any conversation,” Boras said, according to The Boston Globe’s Tim Healey. “Any player who plays well somewhere, it’s something that’s important for the team and important for the player. It’s an additive.”

The Red Sox are no longer in a financial crunch, so they can actually have those conversations with Bregman. He was slashing .299/.385/.553 before his quad injury.

The Red Sox entered Wednesday 2 1/2 games out of an American League Wild Card berth. Bregman has the potential to carry the team into October. He is a two-time All-Star and could be a player the Red Sox want to build around. Signing him to an extension is now a possibility as the Red Sox have the money and his representation is ready to talk.
