Red Sox ‘Remain In Hunt’ For Juan Soto As Slugger’s Free Agency Decision Looms

All eyes have been on Juan Soto this winter as his free agency has left nearly all other transactions in limbo.
Unlike some recent years, a decision from the biggest free agent is expected to come sooner rather than later as Soto is reportedly narrowing down his list of potential landing spots. According to multiple reports, the teams in heavy pursuit of the 26-year-old include the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox.
While there is a seemingly endless stream of conflicting reports, the general consensus has been that the Mets are among the favorites to land the superstar. Beyond that, keeping a comprehensive list of other favorites or longshot suitors according to every MLB reporter is a full time job.
No team’s purported standing in the Soto sweepstakes has been more inconsistent than the Red Sox’s, with some speculating they would be among the first on the chopping block. New reports are saying otherwise.

“According to major league sources, the Sox are not among the teams that have been eliminated,” wrote Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. “Instead, they remain in the hunt for the 26-year-old, who has forged a .285/.421/.532 line with 201 home runs, one of the best starts in history by a player who arrived in the big leagues at such a young age.”
Speier, among others, has confirmed that all teams that are still in contention for the superstar have all made offers of at least $600 million. Such a contract would be second only to Shohei Ohtani’s landmark $700 million deal he signed last offseason with the Dodgers, and we may not have long to wait until it is signed.
“I believe, based on what I’ve been told from sources the last couple of days,” MLB insider Jon Morosi said Monday on MLB Network, “that we will know where Juan Soto is going within the next 10 days.”
The anticipation has Red Sox fans on the edge of their seats, but not for much longer. With MLB’s winter meetings starting Monday, the finish line for Soto is in sight, and perhaps other races as well.
“The pursuit of other top free agents is expected to accelerate once Soto makes his decision,” Speier wrote, “for the industry as a whole and the Red Sox specifically.”
