Red Sox Reportedly Still Targeting Trade For $116M Superstar

For the last few weeks, the Boston Red Sox have reportedly been eyeing a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks superstar Ketel Marte, but nothing has come to fruition yet. At the winter meetings, the heat turned up on Boston.

The Red Sox whiffed on Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber over the last two weeks. Schwarber landed with the Philadelphia Phillies on a new deal, while Alonso signed with the Baltimore Orioles. As a result, the options for star infielders are quickly dwindling before the Red Sox’s eyes.

Chris Cotillo of MassLive reported on Friday that the Red Sox are still pursuing a trade for Marte after the winter meetings.

“As of Thursday night, the Red Sox remained in pursuit of many of the top position players still on the market, casting a wide net in terms of type of transaction (both free agents and trades) and positional fit,” Cotillo wrote. “Boston remains engaged with free agent Alex Bregman, a source said, and is involved in trade talks with Arizona on Ketel Marte as well as Houston on Isaac Paredes.”

A trade for Marte would likely cost the Red Sox Jarren Duran, a top pitching prospect, and then some. But for a superstar like Marte, it would be worth it.

The star would slot into the middle of the lineup as the impact bat that the Red Sox are chasing. He would be able to replace Bregman without breaking the bank. This would also allow the Red Sox to pursue another top pitcher, such as Michael King, in free agency. The opportunities are endless.
