Republican Hands Mike Johnson Warning After Winning Speakership
GOP Representative Chip Roy of Texas has warned House Speaker Mike Johnson that a significant number of House Republicans have “reservations” about him despite his narrow reelection as speaker on Friday.
Why It Matters
While a number of House Republicans were critical of Johnson in recent weeks, President-elect Donald Trump backed his continued speakership. Johnson’s win in a first ballot vote on Friday demonstrated that Trump still has strong control over his party.
Representative Thomas Massie was the lone Republican to vote against Johnson, while two other congressmen—Ralph Norman of South Carolina and Keith Self of Texas—changed their votes to back Johnson at the last minute.
What To Know
“Everything we do needs to set the Congress up for success and to deliver the Trump agenda for the American people,” Roy wrote on X (formerly Twitter) just before Norman and Self switched their votes.
“Speaker Johnson has not made that clear yet, so there are many members beyond the three who voted for someone else who have reservations.”

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.
