Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pitched a meeting with Democratic nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss gaining a role in her administration if she wins the 2024 race for the Oval Office, in exchange for Kennedy’s endorsement, multiple outlets reported on Wednesday.
The Context
Kennedy in July met with former President Donald Trump in Milwaukee amid the Republican National Convention, according to The New York Times. Kennedy campaign spokesperson Stefanie Spear later confirmed the reports: “Yes, Mr. Kennedy met with President Trump today to discuss national unity, and he hopes to meet with leaders of the Democratic Party as well,” while adding RFK Jr. does not plan to drop out, the Times also reported.
Kennedy’s reported interest in meeting with Harris comes as national polls place her near or ahead of Trump in key battleground states. Newsweek has reached out to the Kennedy and Harris campaigns via email for comment Wednesday night.
What We Know
According to The Washington Post, Kennedy wanted to discuss possibly serving as Cabinet secretary if Harris wins, in exchange for his endorsement of her over Trump. According to the Post, Harris’ campaign has not responded to the request for a meeting.
