Satellite images show US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman at war with Iran-backed Houthis

New satellite images show the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in the Red Sea as it leads an operation against the Iranian-backed Houthi group in Yemen, which has faced nearly a month of air attacks.

Newsweek sought comment from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

Why It Matters

Conflict in the Red Sea region threatens a vital global shipping route. The United States, in the name of maintaining regional stability and defending ally Israel, has stepped up efforts against the Houthi group — which it labels a terrorist organization.

U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed the destruction of the Houthi group in Yemen following their launch of hundreds of missiles at ships in the Red Sea. The group has also been backed by Iran, with which the United States is at odds over its nuclear program.

The Houthis have continued to launch missiles against the American naval vessels in the Red Sea and towards Israel despite more than three weeks of U.S. airstrikes.

The group, known as Ansar Allah, said it had increased its targeting of the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier and its affiliated warships with ballistic and cruise missiles. There have been no reports of damage. The Houthis have further claimed to have shot down several American MQ-9 Reaper drones.

Because of tensions over the Iranian nuclear program, the U.S. has increased its military presence in the region, deploying B-2 bombers and with an aircraft carrier strike group led by the USS Carl Vinson set to join the USS Harry S. Truman. U.S.-Iran talks are due at the weekend and Trump has threatened to bomb Iran if no deal can be reached.

Since 2023, the Houthis have launched hundreds of attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. They say they are enforcing a blockade on Israeli ships in response to Israel’s airstrikes on Gaza and blockage of the entry of humanitarian aid in its war against Hamas since the Palestinian group attacked Israel in October 2023.

What People Are Saying

U.S. President Donald Trump, Oval Office, Tuesday: “We’ve put a major hurt on the Houthis which nobody’s been able to do. We’ve really hit them hard and they know it and they don’t know what to do and its every night, night after night, and we’ve got many of their leaders and their experts. Their experts on missile I mean, they actually make missiles, nobody thought that. They make missiles, its highly sophisticated and they’re very tough but they’ve been very badly damaged.”

Houthi Military Spokesperson Yahia Sarea, Wednesday: “In response to its crimes against citizens in several governorates, the Air Force carried out a targeted operation, targeting a number of enemy warships, led by the US aircraft carrier Truman, north of the Red Sea, using a number of drones.”

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Oval Office, Tuesday: “We’re not gona relent until the Houthis declare they will stop shooting at our ships. And we’ve been very clear that Iran as well they should not continue to provide support for the Houthis.”

What Happens Next

U.S. strikes on Yemen are set to continue while the Houthis will continue trying to show that they have not been beaten by firing missiles and shooting down drones.
