Scottie Scheffler Reveals Choice of 2 ‘Weapons’ at PGA Championship

After winning the CJ Cup Byron Nelson the way he did, Scottie Scheffler is one of the heavy favorites to win the 2025 PGA Championship. The World No. 1 seemed to be on top of his game at TPC Craig Ranch, which should be a concern for everyone at Quail Hollow.

Like all of his peers, Scheffler has a game plan for the famed course in Charlotte, North Carolina, although he revealed during his pre-event press conference that he is still working out some details. His hesitation boils down to which of two of his top guns to prioritize this week:

“As far as bag setup, there is a little bit of thinking to do whether or not I’ll use my 5-wood or my 3-iron,” he said, “but that’s pretty typical for a week. I have two really good weapons there in that part of the bag, and each week I kind of just have to pick and choose.”

“This week may be more of a 5-wood week just because, like you said, the golf course is going to play really long, the rough is thick, and the run-up areas after this kind of rain are going to be really soft, and the greens are still going to be really firm because they’re new.”

It is not unusual for Scheffler to think about prioritizing distance over accuracy, as he is arguably the best ball striker in world golf. However, he also made it clear how important it is for him to be able to put the ball in the right place:

“You have to be able to land the ball up on the green. You can’t really run it up around this golf course. That’s one aspect that you’ve got to think about. But as far as my approach to the course, not really. I know what my skill set is, and I’ll try to use that to my advantage and hopefully hit some solid shots this week.”

Scheffler has never played stroke play at Quail Hollow. His only experience there was at the 2022 Presidents Cup, where he contributed only 0.5 points in four matches to the U.S. team’s victory.

Nevertheless, he will start as the favorite at the PGA Championship for the second year in a row. Last season, he was unable to capitalize on that favoritism due to the aftermath of his now-infamous arrest outside Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky.

The two-time Masters winner has played in the PGA Championship five times, finishing in the top 10 four times. His best finish to date is a tie for second in the 2023 edition.
