Seahawks Give Huge Update on Geno Smith’s Knee Injury

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith took a scary knee injury at Sunday Night Football, and the team has a big update: it appears “structurally” okay but he is not yet cleared for the rest of the season.

According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, Smith will require more tests on his knee to determine whether he can face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 16.

While the Seahawks appear to be optimistic about Smith’s chances to play, even the chance of losing their starting QB at the end of the season is potentially huge.

Last night’s 30-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers dropped Seattle into a tie with the Los Angeles Rams for first place in the NFC West, further raising the stakes in the final weeks of the season.

Smith was forced to leave the game midway through the third quarter after taking a low hit from linebacker Edgerrin Cooper. As Smith attempted to throw an incomplete pass on first down, Cooper dove into the back of his right leg, causing the quarterback’s knee to hyperextend as his cleat got caught in the turf.

The hit, which went unpenalized, visibly angered Smith. He limped off the field but soon collapsed onto his back in pain. After being examined in the medical tent, he hobbled into the tunnel for further evaluation.

Cooper commented on the hit post-game, calling it “100 percent” clean.

“He just said I was diving at his ankles, but I was just trying to go get him down,” Cooper said. “That was it, simple as that.”

Sam Howell had a difficult time stepping in for Smith, completing just 5 of 14 passes for 24 yards and throwing an interception. He was sacked four times and faced pressure on 53% of his dropbacks.

This marks the second knee injury of Smith’s 11-year NFL career, with his first coming in 2019 when he suffered a patella sprain during the preseason.

Prior to the injury, Smith had thrown for 149 yards, completing 15 of 19 attempts, but had no touchdowns and one interception.

Despite this setback, Smith has enjoyed a strong season overall. Through 13 games, he has already surpassed his 2023 completion total, averaging 267.2 passing yards per game, his highest mark since becoming the Seahawks’ starting quarterback in 2022.

The Seahawks’ defeat last night not only ended their four-game winning streak but also dropped them out of the playoff picture, with the Washington Commanders moving one game ahead for the final wild-card spot. Washington also has a crucial tiebreaker advantage, owning two more conference victories.
