Sheryl Lee Ralph Injured in ‘Scary’ Car Crash

Actor Sheryl Lee Ralph revealed she was injured in a car crash.

During an appearance on Good Morning America (GMA) on Thursday, the Abbott Elementary star, 68, said she hurt her arm in the accident.

Newsweek reached out to Ralph’s representative via email for comment.

“You have that little sling there, what happened?” GMA cohost George Stephanopoulos asked her. “Are you OK?”

“I was a passenger in an SUV headed to my speaking engagement, and I guess the driver was disoriented, and we literally nosedive off of the loading dock of the convention center,” Ralph explained. “It is the craziest thing to feel yourself going straight down.”

The Emmy Award winner said that it was “scary” but praised the vehicle she was in for saving her life.

“I don’t know if it was a Cadillac or a GMC, but that car—it came down on that front right wheel, it went forward, it dropped down, down, down, righted itself, and it kept moving!” she said. “I was like, ‘Whatever car that is, thank you, car, thank you. Thank you, American car makers.'”

Contributing GMA anchor Rebecca Jarvis compared her anecdote to “a scene straight out of My Cousin Vinny,” she said through laughter, referring to the hit 1992 trial drama.

Ralph added that the experience made her realize “life is short.”

“You do not know what it’s going to bring to you. Every day appreciate it and the people and things around you.”

The Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit alum also discussed the accident on Thursday’s episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. At the start of their chat, host Stephen Colbert pointed out the “elephant in the room,” referring to her sling.

Ralph confirmed the crash occurred on Monday morning, but she still attended the speaking engagement she was headed to.

“The adrenaline kicked in so much,” she said. “But I felt like, ‘OK, move forward, move forward.'”

Later that night, Ralph received an award from the MCC Theater in New York City and said the pain kicked in the following day.

“I woke up Tuesday feeling like I had done 12 rounds with Muhammad Ali,” she said. “It was terrible.”

“But this is all I got, not a coffin, and I’ve got you right there,” she teased Colbert.

Ralph will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next week, and Colbert asked her what the honor means to her.

“Stephen, for me, having a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, it’s really not so much for me but for all the other artists and really people out there on the grind who think that they are unseen, think that it can’t happen for them. It can actually happen for you! That’s what it means for me.”

Abbott Elementary airs Wednesdays on ABC at 8:30 p.m. ET.
