Social Security This Week: Payments of Up to $5,108 To Be Paid
Millions of Social Security recipients will be paid their April benefits this week—are you one of them?
Why It Matters
The Social Security Administration (SSA) pays retirement, survivor and disability benefits to some 70 million Americans on a monthly basis. Payments are administered on a monthly basis and paid in one lump sum for the majority of recipients.
What To Know
Retirement checks are distributed throughout the month, based on the recipient’s birth date and the duration of their benefit payments. Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which provides financial assistance to elderly, blind and disabled individuals with limited income and assets, is usually issued at the start of each month.
This week, payments will be made to all those born between the 1st and 10th of any given calendar month on Wednesday, April 9.

GETTY
How Much Can I Get?
For retirement benefits, the maximum benefit depends on the age you retire. For example, if you retire at full retirement age in 2025, your maximum benefit would be $4,018.
But if you retire at age 62—the earliest age possible—in 2025, your maximum benefit would be $2,831. If you retire at age 70 in 2025, your maximum benefit could be $5,108.
For SSI, the amount a beneficiary receives varies based on factors like income, type of disability, and how many people live in the claimants household. The maximum available for a single person for this year is $967, and $1,450 per month for a couple.
Changes for April
April marks the first month that boosted benefits will be paid to those who were formally impacted by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), both of which were repealed by the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act in January this year.
The SSA confirmed in February that boosted benefit payments would be made beginning in April. Retroactive payments for benefits issued back to January 2024 have already been issued.
The SSA has said that, “depending on factors such as the type of Social Security benefit received and the amount of the person’s pension, the change in payment amount will vary from person to person.”
Further Payment Dates for April 2025
More benefit payments will be made on the following dates this month:
- April 16: Benefits for those born between the 11th and 20th.
- April 23: Benefits for those born between the 21st and 31st.
The SSA says recipients should wait three working days before contacting the government agency if a payment hasn’t arrived as expected. Federal holidays and weekends are not working days.
