‘Still Growing’ Prospect Could Be Emerging As Next Yankees Superstar Before Our Eyes

The New York Yankees are loaded with talent, but their infield doesn’t have the depth that most franchises would like to have.
Fortunately for the Yankees, they have a talented farm system of prospects that could be headed to the big leagues in the next few years to help solve the major issues on the infield dirt.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter recently listed top Yankees infield prospect George Lombard Jr. as one of the best prospects under the age of 21 in the game of baseball. Lombard received a lot of rumored attention as a trade chip at the deadline, but wasn’t moved.

“Lombard hit .329/.495/.488 in 111 plate appearances at High-A to start the season before making his Double-A debut a month before his 20th birthday,” Reuter wrote. “The 6-foot-2, 190-pound shortstop is still growing into his power, but he has an advanced approach at the plate and some of the best defensive tools of any shortstop prospect.”
Anthony Volpe was supposed to be the next franchise shortstop in the Bronx, but he’s turned into more of a headache than anything. The Yankees are only a year or two away from replacing Volpe with Lombard in a move that should have the Yankees’ faithful excited.
Lombard hasn’t been great since being elevated to Double-A, but he has the potential to be a true five-tool prospect down the line. His glove and arm never slump. There’s Gold Glove potential deep down inside the star, but the impressive hit tool should raise some eyebrows, too.
