Student Loan Update: Donald Trump Makes Changes Through Executive Order
President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order restricting student loan forgiveness for individuals working in public service careers, specifically targeting certain nonprofit organizations, according to White House Staff Secretary Will Scharf.
Scharf stated that the order is designed to prevent loan forgiveness for those employed at nonprofits engaged in “improper activities,” such as assisting illegal immigration. While details remain unclear, the move appears to be aimed at organizations working on causes Trump opposes.
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, created by Congress, allows government and nonprofit employees to have their remaining student loan balances wiped out after 10 years of payments. Since it was established legislatively, it remains uncertain whether the Trump administration has the authority to unilaterally modify the program.
