‘Sweetpea’ Star Ella Purnell Nearly ‘Blinded’ in Injury—’I Could Have Died’

Ella Purnell made some major life changes after a near-death experience that almost blinded her this year.

Better known as Rhiannon Lewis in Starz’s new dark comedy Sweetpea and as Lucy MacLean in the post-apocalyptic phenomenon Fallout, the actress was speaking to Mythical Kitchen‘s Josh Scherer about her hypothetical “last meal” when the chilling incident popped up in conversation.

At an unspecified location, the 28-year-old tumbled down a flight of stairs and only narrowly missed out on losing an eye.

Purnell revealed to Scherer: “I fell down the stairs and I got a concussion and I hit my head next to my eye. There’s a scar there. I had a head wound and a concussion and I really feel like I could’ve died or at the very least blinded myself.”

His London-born guest did go on to concede that the term “near-death experience” might be taking it a bit far, though.

“It was kind of a pivotal moment and my life was really different—this happened like three months ago and I made a lot of changes in my life and I’m so much happier now,” she continued, before listing off the various edited behaviors.

“Saying no to more things. I can prioritize the things that make me happier and kind of putting a greater emphasis on friends and family. I realized I’ve definitely been neglecting my friends and family a lot.”

Scherer originally asked Purnell how often she thinks about dying.

“I kind of don’t,” she said. “I think about the unfulfilled potential part of it. I actually think of it as a healthy thing; I am scared of death. There are people that aren’t scared of death aren’t there…”

The YouTube channel host suggested these individuals are simply “distracting themselves” from the cold reality, arguing: “I think facing it head-on, like consciously thinking about it is something that’s really important.”

Meanwhile, later on in the interview, Scherer wanted to know Purnell’s thoughts on what happens after we die.

“I’d rather just kind of be dead forever and like, you know when you don’t remember you’re asleep? I just want it to be like that. I want to be done with it,” she replied.

In her latest TV show Sweetpea, Purnell’s administrative assistant Rhiannon develops a sinister habit following the death of her father. Consisting of six episodes, it premiered last week and was created by Kirstie Swain.
