They not only want to contend for a national title this year, but they want to become the standard bearer in a topsy-turvy conference where the standings are never predictable. The Red Raiders want an era of supremacy in the Big 12.
The first move in their plan came at the start of December, when they extended head coach Joey McGuire for seven more years through the 2032 season.
The next moves came in quick succession on Tuesday, as the Red Raiders locked up their headlining coaching staff and front office for three years in hopes of building a stronghold that can routinely compete for the top prize in college football.

In an unprecedented move, they are locking up the Offensive Coordinator Mack Leftwich, Defensive Coordinator Shiel Wood, Special Teams Coordinator Kenny Perry, and General Manager James Blanchard. As if it were a Royal Flush, Texas Tech laid down its hand for the rest of the nation to see as programs across the country see their staff moving schools at a record pace.
Texas Tech went 12-1 for the 2025 campaign and won the Big 12 Championship Game over the BYU Cougars to solidify its spot in the top-four standings and receive a first-round bye.
While eight other teams will do battle for their lives this weekend, Texas Tech will watch as they await the winner of Oregon vs. James Madison to see who they will play in the Orange Bowl on the first day of the new year.
