Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

The most hilariously ridiculous cop spoof series is back. At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Paramount kicked off its time with a debut of the teaser for “The Naked Gun” reboot with Liam Neeson replacing the late Leslie Nielson in the lead role. You can watch the teaser below.

The clip starts off with Neeson’s character, Frank Drebin Jr., foiling a bank robbery by disguising himself as a little girl. We then see a row of cops praying to portraits of their fathers – all characters from the older “Naked Gun” films, including the most controversial of them all, OJ Simpson.

Liam Neeson isn’t generally known for comedy but that could change after this. If “The Naked Gun” proves as successful as its predecessors, Neeson could become known better for laughs than he is for finding kidnapped daughters.

“The Naked Gun” came from the minds of the three writers known as ZAZ (David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker). After helping to bring to life the successful spoof film “Airplane!,” the team was looking to do another spoof film.

At first, Paramount instead let them turn their police parody idea into the series “Police Squad!” which was canceled after only four episodes. After ZAZ added a romantic element to its concept, it was greenlit by Paramount, and a film series was born.

“The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!” premiered in 1988 and did well, earning $152 million against a production budget of $12 million. The first sequel, 1991’s “The Naked Gun 2 1/2:The Smell of Fear” did even better, making $192 million. The final film performed the worst of the three, but still was far from a flop. In 1994 “The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult” made $132 million against a production budget of $30 million.

OJ Simpson has proven to be one of the most awkward additions to the collective memory of “The Naked Gun.” The third and final film (until now) was released in theaters only a few months before Simpson was arrested for the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

“The Naked Gun” is directed by Akiva Schaffer and produced by Seth McFarlane. The film stars Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Kevin Durand, Danny Huston, Liza Koshy, Cody Rhodes, CCH Pounder, and Busta Rhymes.
