‘The Office’ Fan Favorite Reveals Cancer Diagnosis
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Actress Jenna Fischer just revealed a shocking health update with her fans that many will hopefully take as a serious warning to get their own health in check.
Fischer, best known for her role in The Office, opened up in an Instagram post on Tuesday, October 8 about her recent battle with breast cancer. The 50-year-old actress shared that she was diagnosed with stage 1 triple-positive breast cancer back in December 2023. “After completing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, I am now cancer-free,” she confirmed in the caption, providing an optimistic update to her followers.
Fischer, who was inspired to share her journey during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, accompanied her announcement with a joyful photo of herself, where she appears with a “patchy pixie” haircut while enjoying a cup of coffee. “A big thank you to Angela Kinsey’s husband Josh Snyder for taking this photo,” she said, referring to her Office co-star and close friend, who she said provided immense support throughout her ordeal.
The Mean Girls alum recalled how a routine mammogram in October 2023 led to a series of tests that ultimately confirmed her diagnosis. While she acknowledged the aggressive nature of triple-positive breast cancer, she emphasized that it is also highly responsive to treatment. “In January, I had a lumpectomy to remove the tumor… In February I began 12 rounds of weekly chemotherapy, and in June I started three weeks of radiation,” the actress stated about her journey.
Fischer revealed that she lost her hair during treatment but found ways to cope, using wigs and hats affectionately dubbed “Wigats.” She made sure to mention that annual mammograms are crucial, as her small tumor had been undetectable during a physical exam. She urged others to prioritize their health, stating, “If I had waited six months longer, things could have been much worse. It could have spread.”
Celebrity friends and fans alike were quick to offer their words of support in the comments. Kinsley wrote, “I love you and I’m so glad you’re sharing. I got your back, always. ❤️,” while Office co-star Ellie Kemper said, “We love you, Jenna ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for sharing and for inspiring.” Mindy Kaling and Quinta Brunson also left heart emojis on the post.
Actress Olivia Munn, who recently went through her own journey with breast cancer, left some kind words in the comments as well. “You already know how much I love you and how incredibly proud of you I am. But I just want to say it again; I love you and by sharing your story you’re helping so many women and saving so many lives. You’re just the best. 💖💖💖💖,” Munn said.
Throughout her journey, Fischer credited her “amazing village,” including her medical team, family, friends, and husband, Lee Kirk, for their unwavering support.
