This ‘Home improvement’ Star Had an Unexpected Reaction to His Major Body Transformation
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Home Improvement alum Richard Karn is opening up about his weight loss journey.
In a Monday, November 25, interview with Fox News Digital, the 68-year-old actor recalled feeling he lost too much weight — despite his doctor saying he was healthy.
“At one point, I lost about 30 pounds, then I put it back on slowly because there were certain things I would crave, and I would give into that, but I kind of evened out [at] where I want to be,” the former Family Feud host remarked. “I went down to where my doctor was very, very happy because it was like, ‘Well now you’re kind of where you should be,’ and I almost felt like I looked too thin.”
Karn revealed that it was his wife, Tudi Roche, who came up with the idea to shed the pounds together.
“We did this weight-loss thing where we [ate] four ounces of meat, four ounces of vegetables, no carbs or not as much carbs. We did that for six weeks, and it really helped,” the Pen15 actor told the outlet. “It kind of realigned what you need. You don’t pile your plate as high anymore because you don’t need it. After six weeks, I think your body and your mind realizes that helped.”
The Washington native noted that “moderation” is essential for health, adding, “If you can, don’t have five desserts, have a bite of one.” He also said exercise is crucial, as he practices pilates to stay in shape.
Karn recounted what caused his initial weight gain, explaining that he went from being a struggling actor in NYC to getting cast on Home Improvement, where food was suddenly widely available. “At some point, you kind of have to stop and go, ‘You know I really could eat all of this, but I shouldn’t. I can’t, and look at me, I’m 10 pounds more than I want to be,'” Karn recalled.
The actor married Roche, 69, in 1985, and share one son, Cooper, born in 1992.
