One of the most popular word-related games developed since the pandemic, Wordle has taken the world by storm since its launch in October 2021.
The single-player app developed by Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle initially had just 90 players, and after being sold to The New York Times in 2022, it has since gained approximately 2 million users as of 2022 according to Firecracker PR.
In playing Wordle, users are given six chances to guess the daily answer and receive feedback through different colors in the squares where letters are located each time they make a guess.
In analyzing 515 million wordles, The New York Times reported that people love holiday words and the most popular Wordle was the word “adieu,” although it often set players back.
The outlet also found that more people unlocked the brainteaser on their first try than can be explained by chance, although it does not always indicate that players are cheating.
In 2022, Wordle was most popular among millennials and members of Gen Z in the US, according to Statista.
The country with the most Wordle solves as of last year was Sweden, followed swiftly by Switzerland and Poland, with the U.S. ranking 18 on the list according to Words Rated.
