Top FDA Official Appointed By Trump Admin Departs After Three Months

A top official at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration appointed under the Trump administration has departed less than three months into the job.
Vinay Prasad, a hematologist-oncologist, was appointed in early May to lead the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, putting him in charge of overseeing vaccines and other biologic medicines. He was also later named the agency’s chief medical and scientific officer.
A spokesperson for Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) told Reuters in a statement: “Dr. Prasad did not want to be a distraction to the great work of the FDA in the Trump administration and has decided to return to California and spend more time with his family.”
Prasad was criticized by right-wing activist Laura Loomer in recent days. In a post on X, she wrote: “Meet Vinay Prasad: The progressive leftist saboteur undermining President Trump’s FDA.”
Newsweek contacted Prasad for comment via his website outside of regular working hours.
