Travis Kelce Breaks His Silence on Heated Chiefs-Lions Moment

The Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions had a high-profile Week 6 matchup on “Sunday Night Football” that ended in a surprisingly dominant 30-17 Chiefs win.

With a game as big as that one, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it brought about some heated moments.

There were more than a few heated exchanges during the evening, with arguably the biggest coming after the game when Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch appeared to snub Patrick Mahomes, who extended his hand for a handshake, before hitting Chiefs receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Mahomes made his thoughts on the situation clear after the game, stating: “We play the game in between the whistles. They can do all the extracurricular stuff they want to do, but we play the game in between the whistles. And we thought we played a great game today, and we’ll keep this momentum moving forward.”

But there was another interesting moment earlier in the matchup that involved tight end Travis Kelce.

The Pro Bowl pass-catcher had a strong game against the Lions, catching six passes for 78 yards. One of his biggest plays was on his first reception of the game, when a huge number of Lions players swarmed him. Kelce also got pushed forward when some Chiefs linemen moved the pile of players as the play wound down.

Kelce’s bother, Jason Kelce, asked Travis about that play during the Oct. 15 episode of “New Heights,” specially pointing out the face his brother made when all of the Lions’ defenders were swarmed around him.

“Take a look at this photo where you’re being helped up by like five different Detroit Lions,” Jason said. “Did you look at your face in this? There’s an age to this face right there in the middle.”

Kelce explained what he was thinking at the time, which was a mix of excitement and a “come at me” attitude.

“You know what this is, this was the first catch of the game,” he stated on the show. “I get hit by one guy and I kind of slide off of him. And now I’m just like, I’m getting pinballed, but I’m keeping the feet moving and then I get held up. And then once I get held up, the stampede is coming. I think I locked eyes with [offensive tackle] Trey Smith about to come in and clean the pile and I was just like ‘hit me.'”

Kelce is up to 28 catches for 321 yards and two touchdowns this season. The Chiefs’ next game is against the Las Vegas Raiders at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
