Trump vs MAGA: The Conversation

Welcome to The Conversation, Newsweek’s weekly roundup of reader comments and opinions. This week, our readers are reacting to the seemingly widening split between President Donald Trump and some of his most loyal Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporters.

The MAGA movement makes up a key part of Trump’s base and losing their support could prove damaging to the president, especially as America gears up to vote in the upcoming midterm elections in November.

Cracks appeared as the conflict with Iran continued. His threat that a “whole civilization” could be obliterated if Tehran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz prompted some conservative allies to publicly denounce the comments.

Trump addressed the backlash by unleashing an attack on several conservative media figures on Truth Social. In his post, he accused the likes of Alex Jones, Candace Owens, Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson of betraying the MAGA movement and derided them as “nut jobs” and “losers.”

This is not the first break between Trump and some of his most vocal supporters, with tensions already building over the administration’s handling of the Epstein files and the president’s intervention in Venezuela. Marjorie Taylor Greene, another longtime supporter of Trump’s agenda, also became increasingly vocal in her criticism of his actions during the latter part of 2025.

Here is what Newsweek readers had to say:

Reacting to Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Trump Warning

Original Article: Marjorie Taylor Greene Warns of ‘Serious Instability’ in Trump’s Thinking

Background: Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of the President’s former strongest allies, warned that she believes President Trump is mentally unstable, and called for his removal from office.

Original Comment: “She and others like her voted him into office, backed him up calling him the best president this country ever had.

Now that she’s finally seeing the real side of Trump, she’s calling for him to be removed from office.

It’s a little too late for her to come to the realization that Trump is unfit for office especially since she had said the same thing about Joe Biden.” alan_koppenst

Editor’s Note: Responding to this article, this commenter points out what they see as an inconsistency in Greene’s position on Trump, contrasting her earlier support with her current criticism. They argue it’s “too little too late” for a change in stance.

Reacting to the MAGA Fallout

Original Article: MAGA Civil War Explodes

Background: Recent splits with high‑profile conservative figures highlight that loyalty to Trump increasingly defines MAGA over some “America First” stances and political ideology.

Original Comment: “Funny how the media tries to spin internal debate within MAGA as a ‘civil war,’ when in reality it shows something the left struggles with, open discourse. Within the MAGA movement, people can disagree, challenge ideas, and still stand united on core principles like America First. That’s not weakness, that’s strength.

Contrast that with today’s Democratic Party, where stepping even slightly out of line gets you labeled, silenced, or outright canceled. There’s no room for independent thinking, just strict adherence to whatever the party line is at the moment. It’s conformity over conversation.

MAGA supporters aren’t afraid of debate, we welcome it. Because a movement that allows different voices is far healthier than one that demands total ideological obedience.” IronLedger

Editor’s Note: Taking a supportive stance, this commenter rejects the idea of a “civil war” within MAGA, framing internal disagreements as a sign of healthy debate rather than division. They argue the movement remains unified around core principles despite differing views.

Reacting to Trump Hitting Out at Former Supporters

Original Article: Donald Trump Eviscerates His Former Biggest Supporters: ‘Nut Jobs’

Background: In a lengthy statement on Truth Social, Trump targeted Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens and Alex Jones, saying they oppose his position on preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and questioning their influence and relevance.

Original Comment: “Ah, yes. The name-calling by this man reminds me of small children who are told to that their behavior is wrong, and why it’s wrong. If you have no intelligent (much less intelligible) response, revert to name-calling.” DesertSon

Editor’s Note: This commenter criticizes Trump’s Truth Social statement and his use of name-calling, comparing it to childish behavior.

Original Article: MAGA Isn’t Dying. It’s Testing How to Survive Trump

Background: As President Trump governs through war in the Middle East, economic strain, and public breaks with former allies, the movement he built is starting to show stress.

Original Comment: “If the MAGA movement had done even ONE thing to make America great again it might have a chance of survival; however, it has been an abject failure in every attempt it has undertaken. Very sad time for Americans!

Time to let MAGA die and get back to the great America was before trying to make it great again.” bwanaFORswahili

Editor’s Note: Taking a strong approach, this commenter argues that MAGA has been an “abject failure” and calls for it to end. The comment reflects a sharply critical view of the movement’s legacy.

Reacting to Megyn Kelly Calling Out Trump

Original Article: Conservative Megyn Kelly Issues Blistering Rebuke of Donald Trump

Background: Megyn Kelly called out President Donald Trump on a recent episode of The Megyn Kelly Show over his recent rhetoric toward Iran.

Original Comment: “LOL…..All these people have egg on their faces INCLUDING THE MEDIA. Oh look…the world did not end. Trump’s rhetoric brought Iran to the table for the time being. Now they are upset that there is no WW3” Ask Edgar

Editor’s Note: Taking a different approach, this commenter pushes back on Trump’s critics and argues that his strategy is working, claiming it has helped bring Iran to the negotiating table.
