Two-Time All-Star Wilson Ramos Announces Retirement From MLB
Wilson Ramos’ major league career was underrated, in part perhaps because he bounced around baseball. In parts of 12 seasons in MLB (2010-21), Ramos played for seven different teams, rarely spending more than a couple seasons with one club.
The exception to the rule was the Washington Nationals. Traded to D.C. as a rookie by the Minnesota Twins in July 2010, Ramos spent the next five and a half seasons with the Nats, making the National League All-Star team and claiming the NL Silver Slugger Award at catcher in 2016.

Sunday, Ramos signed a one-day contract with the Nationals to officially retire with the franchise that gave him the best years of his career.
“I’ve got good memories here in D.C.,” Ramos said. “I played with a bunch of guys, have good memories with you guys. I’m very excited for this moment. I was waiting to do it. Now I’m very happy to finally do it. I’m very excited.”

Ramos retires with a career batting average of .271 in MLB, along with 136 home runs and 534 RBIs. He split his 2021 season with the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers, slashing .205/.248/397 in 44 games.

Ramos also spent time with the Tampa Bay Rays (2016-18), Philadelphia Phillies (2018), New York Mets (2019-20), and Texas Rangers (2022) organizations. He made the American League All-Star team with the Rays in 2018.

Ramos continued playing for another four seasons after his major league days ended. He briefly suited up for the Texas Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate in 2022, before venturing into the independent Atlantic League, as well as leagues in Mexico and his native Venezuela.
Ramos, 37, played 49 games for Bravos de Margarita of the Venezuelan Winter League during the 2024-25 season, slashing .227/.275/.358.

The memories that stand out the most from Ramos’ career with the Nationals?
“The no-hitters,” he said. “That means a lot for me here, with Jordan (Zimmerman) and Max (Scherzer). … Catcher, if my pitcher’s doing well, it always made me feel good in my career.”
Zimmerman no-hit the Miami Marlins on the final day of the 2014 MLB regular season. It was the first no-hitter in franchise history since the team relocated from Montreal.
Scherzer threw two no-hitters with the Nationals, both during the 2015 season. No Nationals pitcher has thrown a no-hitter since.
