US announces update for millions of passport applicants

New passport acceptance fairs in May will offer extended hours and weekend access as demand remains high, according to a State Department update.

Why It Matters

High passport demand has made it harder for some applicants to secure appointments during regular hours.

These special fairs are meant to ease access for applicants who must apply in person.

What To Know

U.S. officials say a new round of special passport acceptance fairs will be held across the country throughout May, giving applicants additional chances to submit paperwork outside normal business hours.

According to the State Department, the events are hosted by passport acceptance facilities such as post offices, libraries, clerks of court and community centers.

Some passport agencies may also take part.

Evening and weekend scheduling is a key focus, with locations spread across eight states, including Florida, New York, Virginia, California, Hawaii, Georgia, New Jersey, and Nevada.

Officials say the fairs are intended for first‑time applicants, children, and anyone required to apply in person using Form DS‑11. Some events may also accept renewal applications, depending on the site.

Rules vary by location. Certain events require appointments or advance registration, while others operate on a walk‑in basis.

Capacity may be limited, so applicants are urged to check details carefully before attending.

State Department officials say the fairs expand access by offering passport services outside regular hours, while standard passport acceptance facilities remain available nationwide.
