USA’s Auston Matthews Sends Strong Message Before Gold Medal Game vs Canada
As expected at the start of the Olympic Games in Milan, the men’s hockey tournament will feature the United States and Canada in Sunday’s gold medal game.
Both teams have remained undefeated. While Canada is coming off back-to-back thrilling, last-second comeback victories over Czechia and Finland, the USA followed an overtime win against Sweden on Wednesday by cruising to a 6–2 victory over Slovakia on Friday, led by a two-goal performance from forward Jack Hughes.
This marks the first Winter Olympics to feature NHL players since 2014, and the tournament has lived up to the hype with a gold medal game showcasing some of the world’s best talent.
One of those stars is USA captain Auston Matthews, who delivered a strong message ahead of Sunday’s clash — even as many Canadian fans typically cheer for him during the NHL season with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“It’s an amazing opportunity… These two countries have shown they’re at the top of the hockey world,” Matthews said. “It’s an opportunity to see what’s what on Sunday, and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Matthews’ role on this team is pivotal. He will need to be one of the key difference-makers if the United States hopes to defeat Canada and win gold — something Team USA hasn’t accomplished since the famed “Miracle on Ice” squad captured gold at the 1980 Lake Placid Games.

Through the USA’s five victories so far, Matthews has recorded six points, including three goals. He also assisted on defenseman Quinn Hughes’ game-winning overtime goal against Sweden.
This American roster is deep, meaning Matthews doesn’t have to be Superman — but he also can’t disappear. Win or lose, he will be at the forefront of either the praise or the criticism.
