Jack Hughes became an instant hero for Team USA, helping the men’s hockey team win a thriller in overtime at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
The New Jersey Devils star stepped up, scoring the game-winner in the 3-on-3 sudden-death session, giving the Americans a 2-1 win over a national hockey powerhouse. In Hughes’ epic performance, he gave his blood, sweat, and tears to the valiant effort on the ice, resulting in the USA’s third gold medal in the history of the Winter Olympic Games.
Hughes’ missing teeth became highly noticeable in postgame interviews and photos that went viral online. Many people who weren’t able to watch the game were likely confused about why he had a gap as he smiled amid his team’s celebration of its gold medal win.

During a postgame interview, Hughes alluded to losing his teeth during the game, making a candid remark about why he loves America.
“I’m lucky I’m from the best country in the world, and we’ve got great dentists there, too,” Hughes joked, adding, “I’m lucky I’m American, and they’re gonna fix me right up.”
Hughes lost several teeth during a brutal moment in the game, as Team Canada’s Samuel Bennett swung his stick up, catching Hughes’ face in the process. It was immediately apparent and drew a clear high-sticking penalty on the Canadian player, resulting in a power-play opportunity for Team USA.
As the game continued on, it became apparent Hughes lost his teeth, as several shots of him revealed a bloody smile and a gap in his pearly whites. However, he played on, and both his teammates and American fans were happy he did.
The Devils’ star connected on the game-winning shot just under two minutes into the extra session, creating an exciting and memorable moment for many spectators.
“The USA Brotherhood is so strong. We were so proud we could do it for them and everyone back home,” he also said regarding his team’s victory.
That memory will live on for Hughes for years to come. He’ll now get back to the United States, find that dentist, and prepare for his NHL team’s next game. The Devils host the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night, as Hughes reunites with his Olympic teammate, Tage Thompson.
