Video Shows Georgians Turning Out To Vote in Record Numbers
A video being shared on social media shows people in Georgia in line for early voting on Tuesday as polls opened in the state.
The clip was filmed in DeKalb County, which comprises a portion of the city of Atlanta, according to Nnamdi Egwuonwu, a 2024 campaign embed with NBC who appeared to be the first to post the video on X. The video included the caption, “Voter enthusiasm appears high on day one of early voting here in battleground Georgia. Take a look at the *very long* line outside of a polling precinct in DeKalb County.”
Egwuonwu’s upload received over 500,000 views and over 2,000 people shared it. It was also posted on TikTok around the same time by an account called @ohsorandom1977, which posts pro-Kamala Harris political clips, where it received almost 380,000 views.
Many social media users who reposted the clip expressed the view that so much early voting in Georgia would benefit Harris. One X user, Leslie Himes, wrote, “These Georgia voters are in line to make history by voting #Harris_Walz2024. They certainly aren’t voting for Trump!!!”
Another X user, Skyler Johnson, wrote, “Georgia had record day one early voting turnout today. Donald Trump should be very, very nervous.”
The key battleground state opened the polls for early voting on October 15 and will be open until November 1. The state has already broken records with 328,000 votes cast — more than double the record number in the last election, when 187,973 votes were cast in one day in the state.
While early and mail-in voting is typically associated with Democrats, the race for the White House in Georgia remains close, as polling aggregator FiveThirtyEight’s average of national polls show that Trump is ahead of Harris by one point as of October 15.
Political analyst Steve Schier previously told Newsweek, “The Atlanta area favors Harris, but rural Georgia is Trump country.”
Joe Biden won Georgia in 2020, becoming the first Democrat to do so since 1992.
According to the University of Florida’s Election Lab, as of October 15, 5,800,325 people have cast their votes early nationwide.
The tracker found that of these early votes, 52 percent were cast by Democrats and 29.7 percent were cast by Republicans. The majority of votes were cast by individuals over the age of 65.
Early voting, which became more prominent in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be offered in 47 states, with the three states without early voting being Alabama, Mississippi, and New Hampshire.
Early votes in person or by mail have become increasingly popular, as 69.2 percent of voters cast their votes early in the 2020 election.
