Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Billy Ray Cyrus –– known for his iconic career in country music –– has a family that’s made quite a name for themselves musically.

After marrying Tish Cyrus in 1993, Billy Ray adopted her two children from a previous marriage, Brandi and Trace. Together, the duo gave birth to three additional kids: Miley, Braison, and Noah. The country star also has a son, Christopher Cody, from a previous relationship of his own, who he welcomed shortly before Miley was born.

The singer and Tish divorced in 2022, releasing a joint statement that read at the time: “It is after 30 years, five amazing children and a lifetime of memories, we have decided to go our separate ways — not with sadness, but with love in our hearts.” A few months later, Billy Ray announced his engagement to Australian singer Firerose.

While Billy Ray has made a name for himself in the music world, some of his children have followed in his footsteps pursuing careers in music and other creative endeavors.

Here’s a look at each of Billy Ray’s kids.

Brandi was born on May 26, 1987, to Tish and her ex-husband, Baxter Neal Helson, and was adopted at the age of 6 by Billy Ray.

Brandi developed a love for horses and became a successful equestrian –– with the help of Billy Ray. “I was very fortunate that, when my dad got his record deal in the early 90s, he took his money and bought a ton of land in Tennessee, so I grew up on a horse farm,” she revealed to the World Equestrian Center in 2021.

In addition to her passion for horseback riding, Brandi also ventured into the entertainment world, becoming a DJ and co-hosting two podcasts: Your Favorite Things Podcast and Sorry We’re Stoned. Additionally, Brandi runs a style blog called Style Native.

Trace Cyrus

Born on February 24, 1989, Trace Cyrus is the biological son of Tish and Helson, and was adopted by Billy Ray at 4 years old. Trace initially gained fame as the lead guitarist for pop-rock band Metro Station, known for their 2007 hit “Shake It.”

Despite facing challenges due to his famous family name, Trace has continued to make music, even performing alongside his younger sister, Noah, in 2022. He has been open about the struggles of being in the public eye, explaining that being a Cyrus often led to him being judged based on his family’s fame. “I love my family so much, but I think I’d be much more successful if I wasn’t part of a famous family,” he stated in a Q&A on his Instagram Stories in 2023.

Trace was briefly engaged to Disney actor Brenda Song, but the pair split in 2012. The musician announced his second engagement in 2018 to Taylor Lauren Sanders, but two years later he revealed on Instagram that they had split up.

Christopher Cody

Billy Ray has a son named Christopher Cody from his relationship with ex-girlfriend Kristin Luckey. Born on April 8, 1992, just seven months before Miley, Christopher’s relationship with his father has remained relatively private, as Billy Ray has rarely spoken about him.

Miley Cyrus –– who was actually born Destiny Hope Cyrus on November 23, 1992 –– is arguably the most famous of Billy Ray’s children.

She rose to stardom as the star of Disney’s Hannah Montana alongside her father and transitioned into a successful music career with hits like “Wrecking Ball” and “Party in the U.S.A.” Miley has also received Grammy nominations and made her mark in Hollywood with acting roles in The Last Song and LOL.

The actress-turned-singer was in a highly publicized relationship with actor Liam Hemsworth for years. The pair first met while filming The Last Song in 2009, and their on-again, off-again relationship lasted for a decade. They got engaged in 2012, broke up briefly, then rekindled their romance and married in December 2018. However, just a year later, the couple announced their separation, and their divorce was finalized in early 2020.

Braison Cyrus

Braison was born May 9, 1994 to Billy Ray and Tish. He also followed in the musical footsteps of his father and siblings and released his debut album Javelina in 2021. Braison revealed in January 2025 that he and Billy Ray will be collaborating on music together. Billy Ray responded by saying that, “This record is gonna be special… I’m gearing up for what will be the journey of a lifetime.”

In addition to his musical endeavors, Braison has a family of his own. He married Stella McBride in 2019, and they welcomed their first child in 2021, a son named Bear Chance.

Billy Ray’s youngest daughter, Noah, was born January 8, 2000. Like her sister Miley, Noah also started with acting and ventured into music, eventually earning a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2021. She appeared alongside her big sis in many Hannah Montana episodes before that, though.

The songstress has also collaborated with her father on the 2022 song “Noah (Stand Still).” The father-daughter duo celebrated the release with a post on Instagram, which Billy Ray caption, “So proud of @noahcyrus. You wrote a great song and delivered a killer performance. Honored to join you on this poignant track.” to which Noah responded with, “he honor is mine daddy!!! so grateful to share this track I wrote about you, pappy and papaw Cyrus .. you’re my hero and inspiration .. I love u ❤️.”

Noah got engaged to fashion designer Pinkus in 2023. “The greatest moment of my entire life was saying ‘yes’ to spending the rest of ours together,” Noah captioned her announcement on Instagram. However, the photo has since been deleted.
