The man accused of fatally shooting firefighters as they responded to a call in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Sunday has been identified as 20-year-old Wess Roley, CNN reports.
Roley is believed to have set a fire in order to lure in firefighters, Newsweek previously reported.
The incident sent the area around Canfield Mountain into shelter in place Sunday as multiple agencies worked to save the first responders who were shot.
Sheriff Robert Norris of the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department told reporters on Sunday during a press conference that law enforcement found a man dead with firearms at the scene while searching one or more individuals believed to have shot at firefighters.
Two firefighters were killed, and a third was injured, Newsweek previously reported.
The firefighters continued to take active fire from the shooter or shooters for several hours as they tried to contain the blaze on the mountain
As of Monday, the Nettleton Gulch fire in Kootenai county has grown to 26 acres, according to Idaho’s fire management website.
