Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Katy Perry made a memorable exit during her last appearance on American Idol on Sunday night, but it wasn’t without controversy — fans were not happy with her actions.

In the May 19 episode, The “Teenage Dream” singer decided to recreate a viral moment from her past by tossing pizza into the crowd during the show’s finale. However, this time, the slice missed its mark and landed on the floor, sparking criticism from fans who deemed it wasteful in the comments section of her Instagram post.

“A pizza my heart will always be on the #idol stage,” Perry captioned the video of the moment.

In the video, Perry playfully tosses the pizza towards a group of eager fans. However, as one girl attempts to catch it, she fumbles and the slice slips through her fingers, landing on the floor. The camera then pans to capture the girl’s reaction before returning to Perry, who responds with an easy shrug before she starts dancing.

As for her outfit, Perry is wearing a long white skirt and a metallic strapless top.

Several social media users didn’t get the joke and were not happy with the video. “Wasting food??” one person wrote. Another said, “Don’t waste food 😢”

“I like her ….. but… IT’S NOT RIGHT!!” a user wrote. “That’s so rude,” while another said, “Audience are not dogs 🐕… Very sad to see this happen 😭”

Another user voiced their opinion, “I’m a fan but this is kinda disrespectful. I’d be annoyed if it ruined my outfit. Id pick it up off the floor and throw it back at her white dress & then do a dance… wonder if she found it funny. Probably.”

Perry bid farewell on Idol at the season 22 finale after being a judge for seven years.

That same night, she appeared at the series afterparty hand-in-hand with her fiancé Orlando Bloom. Fellow Idol judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie also attended the party, along with host Ryan Seacrest.
