Why Kelly Ripa Literally Kicked Mark Consuelos in the Crotch

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

It was quite the morning show spectacle when Kelly Ripa gave her husband and co-host Mark Consuelos more than just a nudge to get moving. In an attempt to recreate the iconic “flying” scene from Titanic — a trend going viral on TikTok — the 54-year-old Hope & Faith icon’s aim was a bit off, leading to an unexpected target: Consuelos’s crotch.

The mishap unfolded during the Tuesday, October 8 episode of Live With Kelly & Mark as the couple geared up to take on what Tiktokers have dubbed the Titanic Challenge. For those not in the know, the challenge involves one person standing on the thighs of another to mimic the famous pose from the film. While rehearsing, Ripa was supposed to plant her feet on her 53-year-old beau’s thighs, but missed her mark.

“We came in early today to try this,” Ripa shared with the audience. “Might I say that one of us got very irritated with the other one of us. Not going to name names. Not going to name names, but somebody got irritated with me,” she joked, eliciting laughter from the crowd.

“I wasn’t irritated with you,” Consuelos explained. “You’ve just got to put the feet in the thighs, not in the middle part.” Without skipping a beat, Ripa said, “I don’t know where your thighs go. Your thighs don’t seem reachable,” adding, “I kick up into your crotch.”

Despite the rocky rehearsal, the live demonstration went off without a hitch — or a kick. The duo successfully completed the Titanic-themed challenge during the broadcast, drawing cheers and applause from the audience.

This isn’t the first time the former soap stars have entertained with their personal antics. On Wednesday, September 11, Ripa pulled out a ruler to measure her husband’s tongue. “I’d like to measure your tongue. Can I measure?” she asked.

The happy couple met on the set of All My Children in 1995, where their on-screen chemistry quickly blossomed into a real-life romance. They tied the knot in 1996 and have since welcomed three kids: Michael, 27, Lola, 23, and Joaquin, 21.
