WNBA Star Angel Reese Sounds Off on Viral Report of Chicago Sky Frustration

Angel Reese followed up a turbulent 24 hours with another double-double on Wednesday, then clarified comments she made about the Chicago Sky’s roster that drew widespread attention earlier in the week.

Reese finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds in the Sky’s 88-64 victory over the Connecticut Sun, recording her 23rd double-double of the season. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Chicago, which improved to 10-30. Reese has averaged 14.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 30 games this season.

After the game, she addressed the controversy stemming from her criticism of the Sky’s direction.

“I don’t think I’m frustrated, I probably am frustrated at myself right now,” Reese said. “I think the language is taken out of context, and I really didn’t intentionally mean to put down my teammates. I want to apologize to my teammates, which I already have about the article.”

Earlier this week, Reese had told the Chicago Tribune that she might “have to move in a different direction” if the team’s outlook didn’t improve. She emphasized the need for roster upgrades, particularly at point guard, following Courtney Vandersloot’s season-ending ACL tear. Reese said Chicago could not “rely on Courtney to come back at the age that she’s at,” calling for a younger, experienced floor leader.

Her remarks extended to the Sky’s overall competitive edge, pointing to the Golden State Valkyries as an example of a team she believes has overachieved. Reese also said she wanted first-year head coach Tyler Marsh to coach players harder.

Against the Sun, Reese’s production steadied Chicago as Kamilla Cardoso added 16 points and Kia Nurse chipped in 12. Rachel Banham and Elizabeth Williams each scored 10, with Banham moving into second place in franchise history for 3-pointers in a single season (82), trailing only Marina Mabrey’s 89.

Connecticut (10-31) was led by Tina Charles, who scored 19 points and surpassed Diana Taurasi (3,341) for the most made field goals in WNBA history, finishing the night with 3,347. Saniya Rivers added 16 points for the Sun.

Chicago never trailed after jumping to an 8-0 start, leading 30-10 early in the second quarter and 42-27 at halftime. The Sky shot 51.7% from the floor in the first half and made 11 of 13 free throws.

Reese, who picked up her eighth technical foul of the season in the second quarter, faces an automatic one-game suspension unless the league rescinds it. That ruling could determine her availability when the Sky hosts the Indiana Fever on Friday.

The Sky, eliminated from postseason contention for a second consecutive year, are still left with questions about their future. Reese reiterated she wants to remain in Chicago long term but expects the organization to be aggressive this offseason.
