Woman Gets Great Pyrenees to ‘Protect’ Farm, Backfires Hilariously

Hopeful a Great Pyrenees would bring a guarding force to the farm, one woman learned that wasn’t the case in a recent TikTok video.

TikTok user @mckenzieschmitt0 shared in a January 8 TikTok video that she was “so happy” bringing home a Great Pyrenees named Lazzie. The thought was the dog would help “protect” the family’s two dachshunds and all the other farm animals. But she quickly learned that her new pup might not be up for the job.

In the clip, the two tiny dogs wouldn’t stop barking at the fence. One would think Lazzie, a guard dog breed, would join them, but instead, she wanted nothing to do with the chaos. The camera panned to reveal Lazzie staying out of the way. She hid between a chair and the side of the house. She must’ve thought the dachshunds could handle it.

Although Lazzie wasn’t fully part of the guarding process, she still seemed interested and kept her eyes peeled on the person filming. She even let out a tiny bark, which shows promise she’ll eventually grow into the guard dog role that the breed is known to be.

The Great Pyrenees was originally bred to work with shepherds as a herding dog in the Pyrenees Mountains, which act as the natural border between France and Spain. They helped watch the flock while also deterring predators.

That protective instinct still runs through these canines, and they’re now known to be excellent guard dogs. While they present a calm demeanor, they can spring into action at any given moment when needed, the American Kennel Club says.

As of Monday, the TikTok video has brought in more than 212,300 views, 47,400 likes and 414 comments. People were cracking up, but they also weren’t too surprised by how the dachshunds acted.

“I’ve never met a dachshund that needs a guard dog,” wrote one viewer, while another added: “I think you meant to say you got dachshunds to guard your Pyrenees lol. They’re doing a great job.”

Defending Lazzie, someone commented: “Did you hear his huffs though? He’s putting in his best effort. ‘Yeah you better listen to them…'”

Others instructed the owner to wait. She’ll become the guard dog the breed is known to be, but right now, she’s only a pup.
