Woman Honors Grandma by Wearing Her Dress to Opera 60 Years Later
A woman’s heartwarming tribute to her late grandmother has tugged at the heartstrings of viewers online.
Anna Kloots had decided to honor her late grandmother and her impeccable sense of style by wearing one of her vintage dresses to a night at the opera—a moment she captured and shared to Instagram on May 20 under @annakloots.
Kloots, an American author and content creator living in Paris, delighted viewers with her nod to the past, blending familial nostalgia with contemporary elegance at the illustrious Opera Garnier.
Viewers were able to see Kloots trying on the dress in front of a gilded mirror and then wearing it to the Parisian landmark.
An overlaid text on the video read: “My grandmother wore this dress in 1964, my mom kept it and gave it to me, 60 years later I wore it to the opera in Paris.”
The poignant clip also features a photo of Kloots’ grandmother in the gown during the 1960s, complete with a pillbox hat and pearls, staples of the era’s fashion.
“My grandmother passed away when I was in my teenage years,” Kloots, who has 470,000-plus followers on the platform, told Newsweek. “There is so much of my life that I didn’t get to share with her.
She added: “Wearing a special dress of hers to the opera felt like I had the chance to take her with me, and show her a little bit of the new life I’ve built for myself.”
Kloots moved to Paris after her divorce, citing the city as the one place she had always dreamed of living in. Her book, My Own Magic, delves into the transformative power of travel and the complexities of human relationships.
The seed for Kloots’ social media presence was planted in 2015 when she began sharing her travels online under the moniker “Travel Outside the Box.” Initially a personal outlet and a community-building exercise, her account soon grew into a platform for travel inspiration, allowing her to partner with brands and eventually turning into a profitable full-time venture to focus on in France after her marriage ended.
The video has struck a chord not only for its visual charm, but also for its message of preserving and celebrating family legacies. For Kloots, it symbolizes a bridge between generations, a way to honor her grandmother’s memory while embracing the vibrant, independent life she has built in overseas.
“A perfect setting for your lovely heirloom dress. It’s wonderful when family members make the effort to keep items from ‘back in the day’ to share with the younger generation. It’s ‘hands on history,'” one viewer, @beautifulvictoria15, said.
Another, @jaimeallen777, added: “This is the most beautiful post…I’m so happy that she got to wear such a beautiful sentimental dress to the most beautiful place in the world.”
A third viewer, @shelly46bry, added: “You look gorgeous. It was meant for you. What an honor!”
Kloots’ grandmother had initially worn the dress to her daughter’s wedding in 1964.
