A man with a bright green mohawk has turned to the internet for judgment after a sleepover with a friend ended in streaks of unexpected color.
Reddit user Froggie-Enthusiast explained that he maintains his vivid hairstyle by mixing green hair dye directly into his shampoo and conditioner.
He washes his hair almost daily due to heavy hairspray use, and said blending dye into his products helps prevent fading.
“This is a common thing people with colored hair do,” the original poster (OP) wrote this week.
Shower Scream
The issue began when a female friend stayed overnight at his apartment after missing her bus following a show. The next morning, she asked to shower.
The OP said he showed her the bathroom and told her to use his husband’s shampoo and conditioner because, “mine is for my green hair.”
She agreed.
Moments after stepping out of the shower, she apparently gasped and screamed. Her blonde hair had green splotches throughout.
The friend later told him she assumed he meant the shampoo was special and that he did not want to share it. He argued that the warning was clear, adding that the bottles had clear caps stained green and that the liquid inside was visibly tinted.
Now, he says, she has stopped speaking to him and is telling mutual friends he should have explicitly mentioned the dye.
The situation sparked a debate on Reddit, with many pundits siding with the mohawk owner, amid more than 500 remarks.
“This wasn’t her grabbing the wrong bottle by mistake, she intentionally used your stuff because she thought you were gatekeeping fancy shampoo, even though it’s your right to keep your products for yourself and not have to share with guests,” a supporter reassured the OP.
“She deserves the messed up hair.”
Unclear Expectations?
Another person agreed: “You’re not the a**hole, you didn’t lie, you didn’t trick her and you didn’t hide anything. You told her it was for your green hair, that’s as clear as it gets.
“Don’t let her guilt trip you into apologizing for being honest.”
Advice columns and etiquette guides suggest that disputes over personal belongings often stem from unclear expectations.
An article reviewed by Seth Hall on WikiHow, advises readers to address the issue directly.
“Be polite and speak using nice language, but be assertive,” the guide states.
“Be reasonable and genuine when you share with them how you feel,” according to WikiHow.
In shared living situations, the guide recommends specific language such as: “Please don’t eat my stuff without asking, and if you do, please replace it.”
It also notes that, “Everyone has a right to their space!”
‘Hurts my feelings’
Friendship experts also point to communication as a key factor when tensions arise. In another WikiHow guide, “How to Cope With an Annoying Friend,” co-authored by Christy Irvine, PhD, readers are encouraged to speak up when behavior causes frustration.
“Simply tell your friend, ‘Hey, it kind of hurts my feelings when you pick at me like that. Could you stop doing it so much?’” the article advises.
In the case of the green shampoo, the OP acknowledged he, “maybe could have been more specific,” but maintained he believed his explanation was obvious.
For now, the disagreement has left both with lingering color, one in his hair by choice and the other by surprise.
