Woman Thought It Was A Beauty Mark—Until Diagnosis Changed Everything

A woman who used to dismiss a mole as a beauty mark had her whole life turned upside down when it turned out to be skin cancer.

On TikTok, user Dani (@deez_lifee) shared a video with the overlaid text reading, “It was just a spot, a beauty mark. It wasn’t supposed to be cancer. I wasn’t supposed to have cancer.”

In the video, Dani can be seen smiling while showing a mole on her face, but the video quickly cuts to her in a hospital bed, about to undergo surgery.

The video then cuts to when she peels off the wound dressing to reveal the scar on her face after having it removed.

“Melanoma doesn’t discriminate. Take care of your skin, wear sunscreen and get yearly skin checks with a dermatologist,” she wrote in the caption.

In another video, Dani explained that her dermatologist had recommended a biopsy after becoming concerned about the mole.

Tests later revealed she had stage 0 malignant melanoma, meaning cancer cells were present but had not spread.

She said doctors then advised additional treatment at a skin cancer surgery center, where more tissue would be removed.

Later in the video, she celebrated the news that doctors believed the cancer had been successfully removed, telling viewers it was the last video showing her face before surgery and saying goodbye to the disease.

‘Important reminder’

Many TikTok users responded by posting guidance about identifying suspicious moles, with one explaining the ABCDE rule used by dermatologists.

“Just remember ABCDE,” they wrote. “ASYMMETRIC, is it asymmetrical? It should be symmetrical. BORDER, does it have a faint or defined border? It should be well defined.

“COLOR, is the color splotchy or even? It should be even. DIAMETER, it should be less than a 1/4 of an inch. EVOLVING, the mole should not be evolving.”

Another viewer praised the creator for sharing the story publicly, noting, “Who knows how many lives you’re going to save with this one post?

“Thank you for this important reminder.”

A third exclaimed, “So proud of you getting it checked, queen! I’ll be 16 years melanoma-free this year.”

Misidentified Skin Marks

Cases where people mistake skin cancer for harmless blemishes have appeared in news reports before.

One previous Newsweek story reported on a 36-year-old woman who sought further testing on a small mark on her cheek.

After pushing for more testing, the woman was diagnosed with Stage II melanoma in July 2023. It was a horrifying discovery, but she was nonetheless grateful that it had been found early.

Another Newsweek article covered an Australian woman who revealed how a seemingly inconspicuous blemish on her nose turned out to be far more than a pimple.

It was later confirmed that the blemish on her nose was basal cell carcinoma (BCC), a type of skin cancer that begins in the skin cells and is usually caused by exposure to sunlight.

Newsweek has reached out to @deez_lifee for comment via TikTok. We could not verify the details of the case.
