‘Wordle’ #1,147 Clues, Hints and Answer for Friday, August 9 Game

Wordle is still captivating millions with its simple yet addictive gameplay and if you’re struggling with today’s puzzle, Newsweek is here to help.

The popular brainteaser was invented by Josh Wardle, a Welsh-born software engineer based in New York City. He perfected Wordle during the COVID-19 lockdowns before releasing it to the public in October 2021.

Following its public debut, Wordle exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021, to 300,000 on January 2, 2022. The New York Times purchased it for an undisclosed seven-figure fee and, soon after, it became the publication’s most popular game.

The premise of Wordle is simple: players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word. A color-coded tile system provides feedback to help players gauge their progress. A green tile indicates the correct letter in the correct position, while a yellow tile signifies the letter is in the word but in the wrong place. A gray tile means the letter is not in the word at all.

One of the unique aspects of the puzzle is its once-a-day format. Unlike other puzzle games that can be played repeatedly, Wordle offers a single new word each day.

Additionally, the game’s design forgoes in-game purchases and ads, offering a break from the monetization strategies that dominate the gaming industry. Wordle‘s accessibility is another factor in its success; it is web-based, requiring no downloads or installations, and can be played on virtually any device with an internet connection.

In May, The New York Times announced it was expanding on the original Wordle game to offer subscribers access to more than 1,000 past puzzles from the official Wordle archive on the web and in the NYT Games app.

“We are thrilled to unlock the official Wordle archive for our subscribers. This expansion is not just about playing past puzzles; it’s about deepening the connection our community has with Wordle and with each other,” Jonathan Knight, head of games at The New York Times, said.

“We believe this will make the daily puzzle even more engaging and provide even more moments of surprise and delight for our subscribers to share with friends and family.”
