‘Wordle’ #1,166 Answer, Clues and Hints for Wednesday, August 28 Puzzle

Created by Brooklyn-based software engineer Josh Wardle, the word-based puzzle quickly captured global attention. Wordle grew rapidly, expanding from 91 players in November 2021 to over 2 million by January 2022. This remarkable success caught the eye of The New York Times, which purchased the game for an undisclosed seven-figure sum in January 2022.

“The game has gotten bigger than I ever imagined,” Wardle said in a statement following the sale. “I’d be lying if I said this hasn’t been a little overwhelming. After all, I am just one person.”

Wordle is still popular to this day, as it remains The New York Times‘ No. 1 game.

If you have never played the game before, Wordle players are given six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Gray tiles behind each letter indicate that they are not in the word at all; yellow means the letter features, but is in the wrong position; while green lets players know the letter is in the word and in the correct place.

Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics who teaches at the University of Reading in the U.K., previously provided some useful advice for Wordle players in an interview with Newsweek.

“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting word chosen,” Aslan said. “Starting off with words that include commonly used vowels, for example, e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences might be helpful.

“Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j or x, for instance, may not be the best choice. You get more feedback after a few guesses. Users need to draw on some knowledge of phonics to narrow down or eliminate some words that they might be thinking.”

The answer to today’s Wordle is “lithe.”

The Merriam-Webster dictionary says the adjective is defined as “easily bent or flexed” and “characterized by easy flexibility and grace.”
