‘Wordle’ #1,169 Answer, Clues and Hints for Saturday, August 31 Puzzle
Wordle was invented by a Welsh-born engineer by the name of Josh Wardle.
He came up with the daily puzzle, whose name is a play on his surname, for his girlfriend who loves playing word games.
Wardle decided to make the game public in 2021 at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, and within weeks it had amassed hundreds of thousands of players.
He eventually sold the game to The New York Times in early 2022, and it recently released the entire Wordle archive to its subscribers, making more than 1,000 past games available to play.
“We are thrilled to unlock the official Wordle archive for our subscribers,” Jonathan Knight, head of games at The New York Times, said in May. “This expansion is not just about playing past puzzles; it’s about deepening the connection our community has with Wordle and with each other.”
Part of Wordle’s appeal lies in its simplicity.
Players need to figure out a mystery five-letter word in six guesses or fewer. They are guided by a color-coded tile system to let them know if they are on the right track.
A green tile means the letter is correct, while yellow tells you the letter appears in the word, but is in the wrong spot. A gray tile shows that the letter does not appear in the word at all.
Wardle told Newsweek why he landed on a five-letter word as the sweet spot for the game.
“There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it,” he said in an interview in January 2022. “That might seem arbitrary but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed.”
