Wordle Fans Make Trump Connection: ‘Very Appropriate’

Today’s Wordle answer raised eyebrows among some players who saw a direct link between the puzzle’s solution and former President Donald Trump’s guilty verdict.

Users posted jokes such as: “Today’s Wordle is very appropriate,” and “No spoilers, but let me just tip my hat to the author of today’s Wordle …..”

One user posted: “Given Trump’s conviction, I started Wordle today with GUILT and ended up with….today’s solution. Very apt all round I think.”

Another post read: “Today’s Wordle solution will be brought to you by Donald Trump.”

“I thought Wordle was supposed to avoid politically sensitive comment!” wrote one X user early Friday. “In the light of yesterday’s court decision, today’s solution seems highly appropriate!”

However, GUILT is not actually the answer to today’s puzzle. For those that are wondering, the correct word is CHAOS.

Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, was found guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records on Thursday after his hush-money trial concluded.

“This was a disgrace. This was a rigged trial by a conflicted judge who was corrupt,” Trump said outside the courtroom following the verdict.

He is the first former president to be convicted of a crime, though this does not bar him from running for re-election. Polling has suggested the conviction might damage his campaign.

This is not the first time people have flagged suspiciously timed Wordle answers since the New York Times acquired the game in 2022 for an undisclosed seven-figure sum and appointed an editor, Tracy Bennett, in November of that year.

The paper said then that the game would use a curated list to draw answers from, and it would tested and programmed like their other word games.

Shortly afterwards, people noticed that on Veterans Day the answer was “medal” and then the day before Thanksgiving, the solution was “feast.”

In an interview with TODAY.com last year, Bennett said of themed answers: “A themed answer would still need to feel random, be unexpected, surprising, and possibly rare.”

The popular word game gives players six attempts to guess a five-letter word (selected from a list of 2,309), with a single solution for each day.

Players are given feedback in the form of colored tiles – a grey tile means an incorrect letter, yellow means the letter is featured in the word but in the incorrect position, whilst green means it is the correct letter, in the right position.

Since going public in 2021, Wordle has taken this internet by storm, being played 4.8 billion times in 2023.
