WWE Crowd Revolts Following End of John Cena’s Retirement Match
John Cena’s illustrious quarter-of-a-century pro wrestling career came to an end tonight at WWE’s “Saturday Night’s Main Event” in Washington, D.C., and what was one of the most anticipated matches in WWE history turned into a near riot by the end.
In a match against the Austrian technician, Gunther, Cena had a marathon final bout with the European superstar, the two trading blows back and forth as the crowd held its breath with every move.
Following near fall after near fall, Cena appeared as if he was going to triumph over Gunther but was caught in an ultimate sleeper hold that forced the 17-time world champion to tap out.

After the match ended, the sold-out crowd at Capital One Arena fell completely silent before breaking into expletive chants about the outcome. Cena tried to calm down the fans from rebelling, but they continued to show their disapproval of the finish as a parade of wrestlers came down the ring to celebrate Cena’s career.
Paul “Triple H” Levesque, head booker and creative of the WWE, was booed mercilessly when he tried to step into the ring to present Cena with a tribute video about his career. Fans continued hurling expletives in what was supposed to be a heartwarming moment for Cena and the WWE as a whole.
With the win, Gunther continues what is now being called a “career killer” streak, after being the one to defeat and retire fellow wrestling legend Goldberg earlier in the year.
